Col. Sir William Standford K.B.E. (1919), C.V.O. (1911), D.S.O. (1902), V.D. (1901)had served in England with the Royal Naval Artillery Volunteers before enlisting in the Frontier Armed & Mounted Police in 1875. He served in four campaigns. For his earliest service, the SAGS 1877-79 Medal is one of only 104 issued with the extremely rare 1877 clasp. He later served in Transkei 1881, Anglo-Boer War (MiD) and in WWI.He was Lt.-Col. & O.C. of the Cape Town Highlanders 1901-14. Created C.V.O. and awarded the Union of South Africa 1910 Medal in connection with the opening of the first Union Parliament. VLSM (1897).
