Never heard of this mounted unit. ??

Thomas Carbutt was a gentleman Squire in the Leeds district of Yorkshire when he decided to acquire land in South Africa. Thomas was consumptive and it was hoped that the sunny climate here would help him. His sons were brought up as Victorian gentlemen sent on the grand tour to Germany to study art and music. The most rollicking personality was a gay bachelor Thomas Munro who had his own private army in the Zulu war of 1879, “Carbutts Mounted Troopers, a unit that patrolled the Berg and cleaned up after Isandlwana.

Hi Littlehand

There was a Unit called Carbutt's Border Rangers. They were lead by Captain F.M. Carbutt.
35 medals were issued to this unit and 12 medals were returned to the Mint.
There was no clasp to these Medals as the Unit did not cross the Border.

Hi all .
I doubt if they cleaned up after Isandlwana as they were all awarded a no clasp medal , if they crossed the border they would have been entitled to the 1879 Clasp . Possibly they went to Isandlwana when the war was over , but I think they would have been
disbanded at the end of the conflict .

Hi 90th,
The Carbutts Rangers or "Blind Owls" as they were known were not noted for their sobriety, and for this reason were not tasked with too much.
If my memory serves me correctly old Thomas served for a while in the NMP prior to the AZW.

"One of the many gaps in my knowledge was happily filled by Major Justin Hulme, who told us the story, in the December 1972 issue of this Journal (Vol. 2. No. 4. The Editor’s Letter-Box) of ‘Carbutt’s Border Rangers’. I have the medal awarded to Trooper H. Brunner of that unit. Like Capt Carbutt’s, this medal has no bar, so I know that Brunner was mobilised in Natal during the Zulu War of 1879, but that he did not cross the Tugela into Zululand. (If he had, he would have qualified for the “1879” bar)."
