PostSubject: Henry Windus. South African Medal and Clasp 1879   henry - Henry Windus. South African Medal and Clasp 1879 EmptySun Dec 12, 2010 11:16 pm

Henry Windus signed on at 10.00 am on 1st January 1878 for "General Service Infantry" with the understanding that he could be called upon to serve in any brigade of Infantry. He declared that he was born in the Parish of St Clements, near the town of London in the County of Middlesex. [I have to find out where this Parish is.] He gave his age as 20 years. His occupation at the time, a labourer. His next of kin, father George of Lambriton, Surrey. [At this time I can find no trace of such a place.] His height 5 feet 5 inches, chest 34 inches, weight 131lbs, his complexion, fresh, eyes brown and hair dark brown.

He had a mole below his left shoulder blade. His religion, Church of England. He was assigned to the 11th Brigade of Infantry for training at Aldershot. His first periods of service are listed under the 2/4 Corps. He served at home from 2 Jan 1878 to 9 Dec 1878, he was promoted to Lance Corporal 9 Aug 1878 and Corporal 4 Dec 1878. He served in South Africa 10 Dec 1878 to 7 Feb 1880. The battalion was employed guarding communications and as supply troops. They fought in the campaign of 1879 against the Basuto led by Sekukuni who was allied to Cetewayo, king of the Zulus. Sekukuni defied the Government from his fastness in the Lulu Mountains between the Oliphant & Steel Poort Rivers. The final skirmish took place on the Intombi River on 8th September 1879, where the 2nd battalion of the 4th suffered some casualties. His Regiment (The 4th Foot, as it was known at the time) was engaged in these harassing operations a few months after Lord Chelmsford's victory at the Battle of Ulundi, where Cetewayo was defeated on 4 July 1879. This event was soon after Cetewayo's victory at Isandhlwanda and his subsequent unsuccessful siege of a small British force at Rorke's Drift.") He was awarded the South African Medal and Clasp 1879. The regiment moved to India 8 Feb 1880 to 25 Jan 1888. His medical record shows he landed in India on 29 Feb 1880 from HMS "Malabar"

Henry Windus, born 1858 in Parish of St Clement, London, Middlesex.; died 14 Jul 1906 in Bombay.
