1852 Appointed Midshipman on HMS Encounter (Screw Corvette)
Jul 1853 appointed Midshipman on HMS St. Jean d'Acre in the Baltic expedition (Baltic Medal) and in the Black Sea, present at the operations against Kertch, Kinburn, and Sebastopol (Crimean and Turkish Medals, Sebastopol Clasp); In May 1854 she formed part of the Allied Fleet serving in the Baltic against Russia in the Crimean War. In 1855, she joined the fleet in the Black Sea.

3 Dec 1856 Mate on HMS Indus (Flag Ship, North America and West Indies)
21 Feb 1858 Lieutenant (Acting) on HMS Tartar (Corvette, North America and West Indies)
19 May 1859 promoted to Lieutenant
22 Jul 1859 Lieutenant on HMS Furious (Paddle Wheel Steam Frigate, East Indies and China)
1 Feb 1860 Lieutenant on HMS Excellent (Gunnery Ship, Portsmouth). 26 Oct 1860 received pension 4s. 6d. per diem for loss of thumb and finger of right hand which occurred at drill on 22 Feb 1860.

31 Jul 1878 Commander on HMS Active (Corvette, Flag Ship Cape of Good Hope and West Coast of Africa) Landed in command of "Active's" Naval Brigade, Nov, 1878; superintended the transport of troops, &c, of No. 1 Column, under Colonel Pearson, across the Tugela river; was present at the action of Inyezane, 22 Jan 1879 and led the assault up the hill against the Zulu right wing; formed part of garrison of Ekowe during the holding of that post; given acting rank of Captain of "Active " and command of Naval Brigade, consisting of crews of "Active," "Shah," "Boadicea," and “Tenedos," and forming part of General Crealock's Column ; superintended the landing of stores at Port Durnford; mentioned in despatches (naval and military); (Zulu Medal and Clasp); promoted; C.B
