LIEUT. AUGUSTUS PATRICK CHAMBERS, Natal Native Contingent, who also fell at Isandlwhana, was the only son of the late Mr. George Chambers, of Thornbury, Gloucestershire. He had resided at the Cape for several years engaged in mercantile pursuits, and had only recently adopted a military career. He obtained rapid promotion in the Natal Native Contingent, and at Isandlwhana was so severely wounded as to be compelled to go to the rear, but as soon as his hurts had been attended to back he went to the front, where he soon received his death wound. The battalion to which he belonged must have experienced some hard fighting, for it lost no fewer than three captains, seven lieutenants, and twelve sergeants
