PostSubject: Medal from Ferreira's Horse   horse - Medal from Ferreira's Horse EmptyTue Oct 30, 2012 3:19 pm

I have, in my possession a 1879 Zulu Medal to W.H.Ford Ferreira's Horse (See Attached Photo's). I would be grateful if anybody could tell me anything about this person and if they survived the War. Also was he involved with Wood's Column and were they fighting Cetswayo.

I do not collect items from this period and also have a pewter mug praising Lord Roberts. I'll put up photo's later of this item, but, I would be interested in the value of the medal as I intend to sell it. I will also sell the Mug.

Thank you. [img][/img]

your medal is worth between £500-600 . I think Jager has one on at the moment at £550.

however could not find it on the1879 roll - but that isnt a disaster for colonial medals - but puts it at the bottom end of the range as far as value is concerned. Will have a more detailed look at the actual rolls later.

Ferreira's horse were not actively involved in the AZW - originally due to be oart of the 5th column they spent the early part of the war based in Sekukuniland.

After the deafeat of the Zulus at ulundi they were ordered up to the Pongola biorder as part of the attempt to capture Cetchwayo.

There principal action was in the campaign against Sekukuni .

They were disbanded on 31/12/1879

hope this helps

Thank you for your prompt reply. I am not in a hurry to sell at the moment, but, I would welcome any more info you find on Mr Ford.

You mentioned "Jager" , I am not familiar with the name, is it a dealer or Auction House ?

There always seems to be some confusion over Ferriera's Horse. The South African Military History Society specifically states they were transferred from Rowland's reserve Column and attached to Wood's Column. Smith Dorrien says they served under Buller in the Beresford VC reconnaissance action on 2nd July before Ulundi. In 'For God, Queen and Colony' Col Ferreira is mentioned as accompanying Colonel Villiers in the northern part of Zululand in July. Then of course they had a leading role in the action in Sekukuniland. Any other information gratefully received.

"Ferreira’s Horse (1877-81). Colonel Ignatius Ferreira, CMG, raised three irregular mounted corps at Pretoria during the first occupation of the Transvaal. The first saw service against Sekukuni in June, 1878. The second, with a strength of 115, served in Wood’s column, and also took part in the capture of Sekukuni’s Mountain in 1879. The third corps was known as the Transvaal Horse, had a strength of 300, and included two 9-pr field guns. It was in action in Leribe, in Northern Basutoland, where it served until disbanded in August, 1881"
