Private Thomas Woodward 1st Btn 24th

Hello All

I have just come across a fascinating set of photographs on Flickr relating to Thomas Woodward who was one of the new draft sent out to re-constitute the Ist Battalion 24th in March of 1879. He is listed in Holmes's "The Noble 24th". The photos include a complete sequence of his original paybook as well as of himself and family.

"Thomas Albert Woodward was born March 6, 1859 at 5 AM on Great Union Street, Drypool, Hull the fourth child of Robert Woodward and Mary Ann Strawson. He was apprenticed as a carpenter and shipbuilder in Hull. He fought in the Zulu War in South Africa in 1879, attained the rank of sergeant, and won the South African Medal. Many stories still exist and have been recorded on his adventures there, and he shook hands with Queen Victoria. He married Laura L. Hamel on November 1, 1880. She was from the Isle of Jersey in the Channel Islands and her parents were born inÔ ($ France. Thomas and Laura immigrated to Manitoba, Canada and lived in Bird's Hill, Raeburn, and Winnipeg and they eventually settled in Lavham, Manitoba in 1900 and became farmers. Their children were Thomas Francis, Phillip, Laura, Charles, and Matilda. The three youngest children, Laura, Charles, and Matilda, married two brothers and one sister of the Henry family of Lavenham. Mrs. Laura Woodward died in 1958 at the age of 104. Thomas's son Charles served in World War I. In World War II grandson Kivel Woodward died in Italy, Hartley and Albert Woodward were taken prisoner in Germany, and several other grandsons also served. The author of this history is descended from this branch. Thomas A. Woodward visited England on his own in 1908 and in 1909 he returned again, bringing his wife Laura as well. It seems he tried to encourage some of his relatives in England to also move to Canada. Horatio Woodward of Hull (1919-1990) recalled hearing that his father's uncle emigrated to Canada, and several years later
this uncle returned to England to visit, and he encouraged Horatio's parents (Horatio and Florence) to also consider moving to Canada".

I see his wife Laura lived to be 104 !!!! .

Hi All,
Thomas Albert Woodward was baptised at St Andrew's Drypool, Laurs his wife was b.1857 in Jersey.
1891 Canadian Census address is Lisqar Manitoba. by 1911 they are living at Macdonald Manitoba.
Thomas Albert dies 1n 1922, Laura dies 1958 aged 104, they were buried together at Rossendale Cemetery Manitoba. there is a picture on the findagrave website.
