| Was he, or wasn’t he, in the Zulu War?
Lieutenant Charles Bliss Parke Hume was assigned to HMS Tenedos on 13 November, 1878. (He probably joined the ship at Simon’s Bay about a month later.)
He is on the Navy List for 20th December, 1878 as a Lieutenant on HMS Tenedos at the Cape of Good Hope and West Coast of Africa Station. He is also on the Navy Lists for 20th March, 1879 and 20 December, 1879.
In the “War and Meritorious Service” section of the Navy List for January, 1881 he is listed as “Hume, C. B. P., Lieutenant of ‘Tenedos’ during the Zulu War of 1879.” In the Navy List for 1883 and 1884 he is again listed, but with the addition of “Zulu Medal.”
The first page on the Medal Roll (the one on CD) for HMS Tenedos is missing. (This is the page that contained the names of most of the ship’s officers.) A later copy of the Medal Roll, which shows when the medals were delivered, omits his name.
Even though he is not on the Medal Roll, it appears that he is entitled to the South Africa Medal, without clasp.
Is he listed on the Forsyth Roll?

| Hi All Difficult this one with no concrete answer. Charles B.P. Hume born 31 May 1852, baptised Fort William Bengal, father James Hume 80th Regt. Cadet RN 2 May 1866 age 14. I find two marriage dates the first Dec Qtr 1879, and 1883 to Gertrude Jean Pitman in both cases and in Portsea again in both cases, i wonder if the first date were when the banns were read?. In his RN papers which are confusing on dates, Boadicea 10 March 1879, Tenedos 3 Oct 1879, Flora 4 to 18 June 1879, Tenedos 3 Oct 1879 to 4 Jan 1883, there seems to be some missing dats? Retired 22 Feb 1890. 1891 census in Lodgings Paddington London, Rtd Lt RN. He dies 22 Nov 1895 in Fulham District London, aged 43. Rai Keynshamlighthorse |

| Rai,
Thanks for resurrecting this subject. I had answered my own question a few years ago, but neglected to add it here. This is what I found.
Lieutenant Charles B. P. Hume was appointed Lieutenant to H.M.S. Tenedos on 13 November 1878 at which time that ship was at Simon’s Bay. Lieutenant Hume traveled to South Africa aboard H.M.S. Boadicea. The “Boadicea” arrived at Simon’s Bay with smallpox among some of the crew and the entire crew was placed in quarantine aboard ship at Simon’s Bay until “Boadicea” was sent to Saldanha Bay where she remained in quarantine. Lieutenant Hume arrived back at Simon’s Bay on 8 March 1879 and was transferred to HMS Tenedos on 10 March. “Tenedos” had been sent back to Simon’s Bay in February for repairs and remained there until she sailed for England. Since “Tenedos” was no longer serving in Natal or Zululand waters Hume was not entitled to the South Africa Medal.
