I have just been given a 1880 edition of "In Zululand with the British throughout the war of 1979". Does anyone know anything about this particular edition? I know there have been later reprints. Also the front page has a previous owner annotation that reads (from top to bottom): W. S. Brown Late King's Dragoon Guards 21st Hussars Willoughby's Horse 1878 & 9. Does anyone have any advice on finding out more about him?

Hi Fajay. That's a great book to be given , the First Edition of Charles Norris Newman's work . I checked the Medal Roll of the 1st KDG's and found ; Saddle Tree Maker , S.Brown , entitled to the Medal with Clasp 1879 , which means he crossed the Border into Zululand , he may , or may not , be the chap who is annotated in your edition . There are many on here who will be able to point you in the right direction . 90th

Hello Fajay.
The 21st Hussars were in England during the Zulu War, so if Brown served in South Africa while with them he must have been seconded elsewhere.
Willoughby's Horse were an irregular unit raised by Captain Digby Willoughby for service in the Basuto Gun War in 1880. Willoughby had been with the Natal Native Contingent in the Zulu War. More than likely that is where Brown saw service.
Very nice book to have.
