Lieutenant (Captain) W.R.H. Crauford of the 91st Highlanders was present at the battle of Gingindlovu, the relief of Eshowe, and commanded the convoys of the column during the advance of Crealock's Division to Port Durnford. In my collection I have three of his letters to his sister Carry, back home in Scotland; the first was written on April 14, 1879 and April 15, 1879 from Gingindlovu. Here is the first letter and transcript: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

RB,
That should be Crauford, rather than Cranford. William Reginald Houison Crauford.
The Craufords were a well-known military family. The Hon. Isolda Caroline "Carrie" was the sister-in-law of a well-known Isandlwana casualty.

JB, Thanks, my eyes are going---in the Mac & Shad reprint where you provided the valuable index, you have it spelled as "Craufurd". Why do you think Lt. C seems to spell his sister-in-law's name "Carry" then? "Pet" spelling?
