| Sergeant B Smith was an ancestor of mine. I have his 1879 campaign medal ( with 1879 clasp ) and would be interested in any information that is out there about it's background / likely action that he saw, or even his first name ! |

| Hi Chris Reeson Welcome to the forum. His first name is Benjamin. I do have a copy of his service record. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |

Benjamin originally enlisted into the 19th Foot (Green Howards) and volunteered for Service in South Africa after the disaster at Isandlwana. The number in the right top corner of the enlistment papers above 1344 is probably his 2/19th number. It is likely that he returned to the 19th Foot. He did not reach Zululand and probably stayed in PMB.
SMITH Benjamin – Sergeant – 25B/1977 – 1st/24th Born Halifax, Yorkshire, England c.1844. Service details: Promoted to Corporal 15/12/1873 ante-dated 13/12/1873. Promoted to Sergeant 19/9/1874 with 2/19th Foot. Arrived in South Africa with draft aboard the Transport Clyde from 2nd/19th 4th Brigade Depot Richmond, Yorkshire 1/3/1879. Serving at St. Botolph Camp, Colchester, Essex c. April 1881 aged 37 years. Honours/awards: South Africa Medal 1877-8-9 with clasp 1879. |

| Kenny Smith was awarded the 1879 clasp, would that not indicate he 'crossed the border' ? |
