Hi Lunger It all depends how much you want to get involved , some are well written with little evidence to back up their thoughts , others are crammed with footnotes detailing the Primary source evidence , believe me there are probably 30 or so that are worth reading , but , as I said , it depends how serious you are , anything by Laband , Knight , K. Smith , Sonia Clarke and Whybra ....also many others who have 1 or two books to their name . You will get people recommending books which as I said lack the primary source evidence , they might be a great read , but nothing to back up their statements etc . 90th

Hi Lunger It was invaluable in its day , was the first book I bought on the subject in 1974 ! , records and archives have been readily available and scrutinized since those days . I think Ian Knight's best book ( On RD and Isandlwana ) would be ' Zulu Rising ' chase down a Hard cover it has the footnotes in the back , the Blue covered paperback doesn't ! . 90th

My favourite book on the Zulu War is - The Sun Turned Black by Ian Knight. This book gives an excellect account of the battles of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift.

Thanks 90th, I have this book as well - yes it gives a good accout with a lot more content but I liked his earlier book for the way it was written. Hard to explain but it gives a feeling being there. It inspired me to get other books on the subject. For personal accounts written by those who were there you can't beat The Red Soldier by Frank Emery. Another excellent book.
