Non-combat casualties in Colonial and Native units. between January and October 1879. Part of a project to collate all of the non-combat deaths suffered during the war and the immediate aftermath. All comments (criticisms, corrections, additions, etc.) would be most welcome.

Thank you Julian,
The 12th comes from the report of Dixon's death in the London Gazette (p.3177), but yes it certainly seem to be an error. Stalker (The Natal Carbineers p.90) doesn't give a date, but seems to place the drowning between the 14th and 19th. Sole (God Queen and Colony) quotes a letter from Trooper Symons mentioning the event, but the extract does not contain a date. WO 100/49.262 and 49.292 are no use - although listing Dixon drowned, no dates are given. Does a source exist for the 16th? Symons' full letter?
Thanks again, Lee

Interesting Avatar Lee, David Hemmings as Captain Nolan in 1968. I was in that movie in a few scenes shot in London.

Back in the day my regiment was asked to provide extras in ceremonial dress. Did duties on a couple of occasions in London and again at the premier.Norman Rossington and Trevor Howard were brilliant, Bought the whole honor guard a beer. Couple of years before I drove a tank, the blue one in 'How I won the war' with John Lennon, miserable sod, in Bergen Belsen

Jealousy Simon is not a good trait. Julian really, must check through the DVD, I have every episode. But at the risk of Pete removing all these posts, the best ever British Comedy is 'The Plank' I have watched that on many many occasions. My grandkids love it.

I'm also a fan of the plank. The MP sketch was the one at the undertaker's where it's suggested they eat his grandmother instead of burying her (at the end when the National Anthem is played).
