"Rorke's Drift Hero. There was an interesting incident in the afternoon proceedings at Powys Eisteddfod at Meifod on Thursday when Field Marshall Lord Haig was received by the Montgomeryshire Territorials and ex-service men. The Territorials included Band-sergeant Evan Jones, of Welshpool, one of the survivors of the heroic defence of Rorke's Drift by the 24th Regiment (South Wales Borderers). Lord Haig at once saw the veteran's decorations, and inquired into his service. In the Regulars and Territorials Jones has served nearly half a century. It was he who gave the alarm at Rorke's Drift, as he was on sentry duty when the Zulus approached. He served in the Kaffir and Zulu Wars, and also in India, and in the late war, though about he promptly enlisted and saw foreign service. After demobilization he joined the Territorials as a bandsman. Lord Haig greatly complimented the veteran upon his record, which was one, he said. Sergeant Jones and the Army had reason to be proud of."
