Hi Kate

Yes John Coates did take part in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and he did serve in the Royal Engineers in later service, Private 425 John Coates, 3rd 60th.

THEFT OF A WATCH - A private in the 3-60th Rifles named John Coates was, on Thursady, sentenced to 3 months hard labour for stealing a watch from a man named Charles Morain on the 1st inst. The theft was likely to have remained a mystery, had the Borough Police not obatined a slight clue which enabled them to arrest Coates in Durban.
