Hi Kate

Yes John Coates did take part in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

He was with the 3rd 60th and is listed as Private 425 3rd 60th and later served with the Royal Engineers.

Hi All,
1911 Census Finsbury Park John Coates born Warwick 1862 Army Pensioner married to Elizabeth, 4 children one born Anglesey 1901.
1901 Census Beaumaris Anglesey Wales, Company Sgt Maj Royal Engineers.
Probably dies Dec Qtr 1937 in Edmonton District London.
No.3343 KRRC John Coates attested 16 May 1878 age 17 therefore born 1861 Warwick, to 3/60 23 Aug 1878, Dublin Castle ship 19 Feb 1879, Zulu War, to Netley 23 Aug 1879, papers state which is difficult to read, over exertion on march from Eshowe April 1879, discharged unfit for further service 29 Oct 1880 at Portsmouth. Can't find his Engineer papers but seem to be the same man.
