| This is an odd little article and forgive me if it has already been discussed on the forum. Bearing in mind where it was published (SA) it looks like it is refering to the Colonials. Colonel Royston is, I am assuming, Lieutenant and Adjutant William Royston (Natal Carbineers) but has anyone any idea who Col E.M Greene is? There are a couple of Trooper Green's in the NMP but neither with the initials of E.M. There are no Green's in the IMI and a cursory glance through the colonial medal rolls doesn't turn up anything either [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Shields Daily News - Saturday 19 August 1939 Or is the whole article a load of old codswollop?

Morning Gary Thanks for that I have amended the title adding Greene's details and AZW rank (Trooper rather than Colonel) as well as Royston's details so they are searchable and connected with this article. Any thoughts on the article itself? Kate

Hi Kate No , not really , think it's an over exaggerated play on words , it's in many of the decent books regarding the NMP and NC that if their horses weren't fit , they , and their owners were forced to stay behind in the camp . 90th

E M Greene later became Col of the Regiment 1891 - 1902 there is a picture of him on p88 of Stalker.

So that you get your spelling correct... Edward Mackenzie Green was a Trooper in the Natal Carbineers whose horse went lame. His cousin, Trooper Malcom Moodie, who remained at Isandhlwana, lent him his horse to ride to the Mangeni. It was Green who later found and identified Moodie's body. In later life Green changed his name to Greene before becoming Colonel, Natal Carbineers.
