An interesting and possibly true story. Buller would know if he was a fraud or not.

Possibly John. Its an interesting link. Malinga could be Malinder/Malindi.
Though reading the short passage in HotS and comparing it with the article above, I'm not sure.
I suppose it depends on how you read it. An induna at iSandlwana suggest he could be fighting the British and there is no mention by him of serving with Lonsdale in the above account.
He could obviously remember British names and would have thought he may have mentioned this in an attempt to make his story as plausible as possible.
But then he talks about being dubbed "Konella" which suggests he was fighting for the English. scratch

Is there any reference to him being with Buller in the Boer War in Harrisons Recollections?

No the last mention of him was in late 1879 just prior the advance to Sekhukhune’s territory.
