Tom I can't find a Hough in Tenedos's medal rolls. Could it be Ordinary Seaman 97302 Alexander Hoff?

You are correct. Alexander Hoff (Hough) was an Ordinary Seaman who served with the Naval Brigade from HMS Tenedos during the Zulu War. He did not serve in the 1st Boer War. In 1883 he married Annie Gray and they had six children of which James was the second born. Both the 1891 and 1901 census show the family was using the surname "Hough."
