Hi All,
Another Paper all wrong.
Webster served in the 99th, during the Zulu War. The 1881 census gives him in Barracks at Devises, b.1848 Phillips Town King's Cty Ireland. 1901 census he is married to Annie and has one son, living in Portsmouth. In 1904 is is imprisioned for 3 yers on 3 charges, theft, and the carnal knowledge of a 13/16 year old [we would call this rape now.]. On the 1911 census he is a Widow and Army Pensioner living Landport Portsmouth.
He dies in Portsmouth March Qtr 1917.

Webster he enlisted 25 June 1864 and took discharge on 6 July 1886 after 21 years service.

I think the original charge would have read Felonious Use of Carnal Knowledge. As you say Rape, but the initials of the original charge still linger. Salute

Hi All 

Evening Express 26 November 1903

RORKES DRIFT HERO SENT FOR TRIAL. 

At Portsmouth police court yesterday John Paul Webster, said to be sole remaining survivor of the defence of Rorkes Drift, was committed for trial, charged with an offence under the criminal Law Amendment Act. Webster iis a pensioner from the army and 53 years of age.

Eddie if you read Rai's post you'd see Webster wasn't at RD . If something is grossly in error I believe it doesn't serve any purpose by posting it.
