| Does anyone on the forum know the location of Burrup's Canteen Store? I am over in SA next month and as it is mentioned a lot in various accounts it would be nice to track down where it was and go there. Thank you Kate |

| Kate,
“The Major” says it was on the Greytown Road to Mpanza.
Even the Express Eugenie stopped there.

| Thanks John. I will drop the Major a line. Over the years have you ever seen a photograph of it? | Kate,
No I haven’t seen a photograph or engraving of it.
Looking for leads on it I found that Joseph Burrup’s genealogy site is maintained by an Adendorff!

| It can't have been too far from Greytown. Looking at the newspaper accounts, and with nothing else to go on at the moment, I've tried to work out an approximate idea of how far Burrup's was from Greytown. The Carbineers don't seem to be travelling all day. It is either a morning or an afternoon march. Using a modern system (Google maps) and the speed the Carbineers were travelling which seems to average about 2.5mph, following what is now the R33 it is about 7.5 miles from the Mvoti River to Greytown. If this was their average speed and daily travel distance it would put them approx 7.5 miles north of Greytown when they reached Burrup's. Spookily, on Google maps it shows a Zulu store in that location. The two riders in the third account did it in under two hours but am assuming they are out on their own, unhinderd by a column.
According to Smith-Dorrien, Burrup's was about 50 miles south of Sandspruit. This takes us to within 9 miles of the modern Zulu store. |
