Extract taken from an article in 'The Evening News' Sat 18 May 1895 published in Sydney:

ISANDULA - The Great Battle with the Zulus - How the Field Looked

I picked up a will written on the day of the fight by a sergeant named George Bryant, who I could see was a native of London. He left to his sister , then in London, certain money that he had in the bank in South Africa. I gave it to Major Black, also some cheques that I picked up

The anonymous article was simply attributed to an 'old soldier'.

Regards,

Tim

Thanks Tim, I was pretty sure that the official record giving the initial G was correct but couldn't be certain because of the existence of S. Your 1895 paper giving G for George nails it.
