Hinxman was formerly a Lieutenant in the 10th (North Lincolnshire) Regiment, when he was engaged in an assault on the stockade at Paroa on the Malay Peninsula on 7th December 1875.  In doing so he was one of the first officers to command troops in action using the Martini-Henry rifle.  His gallant actions during the assault were recognised with his promotion to Captain in the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment.
