New From Zululand Empty
PostSubject: New From Zululand   New From Zululand EmptyFri Aug 11, 2023 10:17 pm

Hi All

New from Zululand:- Mr Evan Thomas has received letters from his son, Evan, who is a Corporal in the 2nd battalion, 24th regiment, Rorkes Drift, Natal, South Africa. Some of the writers words are:- we fought very hard for three days -viz, the 20th, 22st, and 22nd of January and lost many of our best men, among whom were some I loved as comrades. Charles Long, George Morris, with several others from Pontypool, , Newport and Cardiff, are in the list of those killed on the 22nd, when the camp was taken by the enemy. Nine hundred and twenty seven men were left to protect the camp. They were attacked by twelve thousand Zulus. Our chaps fought like devils, and died like stone. We were at the time on a large mountain about twenty miles from camp. We killed about sixteen thousand Zulus on the 22nd, and that was not bad work.
When we returned, we had to fight again to regain the camp,. We were fighting from 4am until 9pm, and afterwards had to lie down on the field, which was covered with blood like a slaughter house at the home after a butchers heavy killing.
