Henry B. Jackson
AKA Henry Bradwardine Jackson

Born: 21-Jan-1855
Birthplace: Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England
Died: 14-Dec-1929
Location of death: Hayling Island, Hampshire, England
Cause of death: unspecified
Remains: Buried, Hayling Island Churchyard, Hayling Island, England

Occupation: Military, Scientist

Executive summary: Radio telegraphy

Military service: British Navy (1868-1924, to Admiral)

Sir Henry Jackson was raised in poverty, joined the Royal Navy at the age of 13, and fought in the Zulu wars before showing an aptitude for torpedo mechanics. He conducted some of the earliest experiments in radio telegraphy and its application to navigation, wiring a radio set on the HMS Defiance, and successfully broadcasting the length of the ship. In 1896 he was able to send radio signals several hundred yards, and the following year he was promoted to Captain and sent to a conference where he met Guglielmo Marconi. They began working together, and in 1900 Marconi was given a budget to install radio across the fleet. Jackson became Chair of the Radio Research Board, and oversaw important experiments into atmospherics, radio direction-finding, and radio frequency measurements, and the propagation of wireless waves. He also served as aide-de-camp to King George V and Admiral of the Fleet, and his father-in-law was mathematician Samuel Hawksley Burbury.

Father: Henry Jackson
Mother: Jane Tee Jackson
Wife: Alice Mary Florence Burbury Jackson (b. 4-Oct-1868, m. Jun-1890, d. 1940, no children)

High School: Stubbington House, Fareham, England (1868)
Administrator: Director of Royal Naval War College at Portsmouth (1911-15)
Administrator: Director of Royal Naval War College at Greenwich (1916-17)

Knight of the British Empire
Hughes Medal 1926
Order of the Rising Sun 1909
Order of the White Eagle 1909
French Legion of Honor

Royal Society 1901
UK Official Aide-de Camp to the King:(1917-19)
UK Official British National Committee on Radio Telegraphy (1926-29)
UK Official Radio Research Board (Chairman, 1920-24)

Jackson saw out the rest of the war as King George V's aide-de-camp and as president of the Royal Naval College at Greenwich. In this period, he was awarded the Japanese Grand Cordon, Order of the Rising Sun, which was duly published in the London Gazette.[3] In 1919 Jackson was appointed Admiral of the Fleet; he retired five years later and died in 1929.
