Sir Henry Jackson was raised in poverty, joined the Royal Navy at the age of 13, and fought in the Zulu wars before showing an aptitude for torpedo mechanics. He conducted some of the earliest experiments in radio telegraphy and its application to navigation, wiring a radio set on the HMS Defiance, and successfully broadcasting the length of the ship. In 1896 he was able to send radio signals several hundred yards, and the following year he was promoted to Captain and sent to a conference where he met Guglielmo Marconi. They began working together, and in 1900 Marconi was given a budget to install radio across the fleet. Jackson became Chair of the Radio Research Board, and oversaw important experiments into atmospherics, radio direction-finding, and radio frequency measurements, and the propagation of wireless waves. He also served as aide-de-camp to King George V and Admiral of the Fleet, and his father-in-law was mathematician Samuel Hawksley Burbury.

Jackson saw out the rest of the war as King George V's aide-de-camp and as president of the Royal Naval College at Greenwich. In this period, he was awarded the Japanese Grand Cordon, Order of the Rising Sun, which was duly published in the London Gazette.[3] In 1919 Jackson was appointed Admiral of the Fleet; he retired five years later and died in 1929. |
