"Born in Dublin 1842, son of Daniel Barret Cuffe; educated at the Catholic University of Dublin, and for medicine; is F.R.C.S., etc., of Edinburgh; entered Army 1863; served in Kaffir War 1877-78; in Zulu War 1878-79 as Senior Medical Officer of Wood's Flying Column; and in Burmah Cam- paign 1886-87; was m turn Principal Medical Officer at Rawal Pindi, in the Southern District, and in the Second Army Corps; retired pay 1902; knighted 1905; member of the Borough Council of Kensington and of Kensington Board of Guardians; married (1883) AMY, daughter of W. J. JONES, of Jonesville and Corozal, Central America".

Surgeon Major Cuffe served in the Kafir war of 1878 as Principal Medical Officer of the Transkei Column throughout the operations against the Galekas. Served throughout the Zulu campaign as Principal Medical Officer ot the Northern and subsequently of Wood's Plying Column from the commencement of operations till the action of Ulundi and conclusion of the war (mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp).
