14 Aug 1876 Lieutenant RMA on HMS Shah (Flag Ship, Pacific) in the "Shah" when engaged with the Peruvian rebel turret ship “Huascar," 1877. Served with the Marines landed for service during the Zulu war, 1878-79; accompanied the Ekowe Relief Column, present at the battle of Gingihlovo, 2 April 1879, and relief of Ekowe, 3 Apr; afterwards accompanied General Crealock's Column, mentioned in despatches (Zulu Medal and Clasp ‘1879’) Served ashore from 3 Mar to 21 Jul 1879.
24 Oct 1876 married Alice Sophia Wintle, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Edmund Wintle

30 June 1882 Captain RMA borne on HMS Alexandra for service with the battalions of Royal Marines. He performed the duties of Paymaster and Quartermaster to the R.M.A. Battalion throughout the campaign in Egypt, 1882; was present at the actions at Mallaha Junction, El Magfar, Kassassin 28th August, Kassassin 9th September, and Tel-el-Kebir (Egyptian Medal, Tel-el-Kebir Clasp, Khedive's Bronze Star).
