27 Aug 1876 Captain Marines on HMS Shah (Frigate, Pacific Station) served in command of the Royal Marines of “Shah " during that ship's engagement with the Peruvian rebel turret ship "Huascar," off the Coast of Peru, on the 29th May, 1877. Commanded the Marines of the squadron landed for service during the Zulu war; accompanied the Flying Column for the relief of Ekowe; present at the battle of Gingihlovo, April 2nd, 1879; relief of Ekowe, April 3rd; and destruction of Dabulumanzi's Great Military' Kraal, April 4th; afterwards accompanied General Crealock's Column; mentioned in despatches; brevet of Maior; C.B. (Zulu Medal with Clasp ‘1879’)

20 Apr 1882 Major Marines on HMS Alexandra (Flag Ship, Mediterranean) Served in the Egyptian war, present at the bombardment of Alexandria, 11th July, 1882, Brevet of Lieut.-Colonel for this service. Landed in command of 650 of the Marines of the Squadron, received and guarded the Khedive in his Palace at Ras el-Tin, employed spiking guns in the forts, and clearing the streets of looters and incendiaries, and held the gates and fortifications of the town until the arrival of reinforcements from England; attached to armoured train for seven days, running daily out to Arabi's position, and frequently under fire; present at action of Mallaha on 5th August, and subsequently at Mex Fort and Port Said until the cessation of hostilities (Egyptian Medal, Alexandria Clasp, Fourth Class of the Order of the Osmanieh).
