25 Mar 1878 Lieutenant on HMS Tenedos (Corvette, Cape of Good Hope and West Coast of Africa) During the Zulu war he was placed in charge, with two petty officers, of the wharf and depot at Durban. Entitled to South Africa Medal without clasp.

11 Dec 1880 Lieutenant Bird placed on the Retired List.

Oct 1881 His medal for the Zulu War was sent to his brother, Captain F.V.G. Bird, RMLI. A notation on the medal roll shows Lieutenant Bird was ‘Insane’.

1883 Died (Notice of Death appears in the Navy List for 20 March
1883, of officers whose deaths have been reported since 20th Dec 1882)

Note: Captain Frederick Vincent Godfrey Bird, RMLI was part of the Marine Battalion sent to South Africa, arriving at Simon’s Bay in June 1879, too late to participate in the Zulu War.
