| Hi Ciroferrara
There are a number of photos of Charlie Harford in the book I put together on Charlie Harford in which I concentrated on his whole life and then mostly his military life.
I am working on the part of his life surrounding his bug hunting and natural history exploits.
The first book is called 'Harford'

| 1879Graves,
With reference to the link you gave I am convinced that the photograph reference number SBYRW : 26331, is not a photograph of 'The Beetle Collector'.
In my opinion it is a photograph of an officer taken in the 1860s. The collar and the crown are much too large for an officer in the 1870s, and on examination the medal does not appear the Zulu Medal. I did contact the museum about this some time ago but they did not get back to me.
What do you or anyone else think?

| Hi Kwajimu
I do not think that is a photo of Charlie - I did not find anything like that in any of his papers.
The majority of the photos on the wardrobe site have come out of the book that I wrote.

| Harford bequeathed a great deal of material to the then Durban Museum. It is now divided between the Local History Museum (historical items, including his Zulu War diary) and the Natural Science Museum (specimens and paperwork relating to Harford's interest in the natural world).
During the 1990's, a volunteer assistant at the Natural Science Museum undertook to make a record of all Harford's donations, to which was added information on Harford gathered during two trips to the UK, one of which included a visit to Harford's granddaughter in Sussex.
Regrettably, all this effort came to nothing. I recently met the ex-volunteer - we have both since retired - and she told me that she still has all the notes made during her investigation. There will be little, or nothing of Zulu War interest, but there may well be something that adds to the record of Harford himself. One such item is a watercolour portrait of Harford as an old man. This may already be known but, if not, I can e-mail a copy to anyone who is interested.

| Hi kwajimu1879 Having a closer look at the photograph, I would have to agree with you. We did have a contact on the forum who worked in the Museum, but I can not remember their name Brett I would like to take you up on your offer. 1879Graves |

| Not to sure which cave you refer to. The mountain behind the kraal is riddled with caves.

| As described in "Gunfight at Sihayo's Kraal", by Kieth Smith, there are two main areas where the action took place that morning. My avatar is the first of those sites. I had the good fortune to go there with Dalton Ngobese and his cousin Muzi who are both decendants of Sihayo. I marvel every time I read of Harford's antics that day, it is a hard place to get to. It can be seen from the main road between RD and Isandlwana, but it takes a 4x4 to get in there.

| Littlehand posted a drawing of the attack that drawing might show the caves. Problem is I can't for the life of me remember when he posted it. The drawing was composed by one of the officers present. |

Refrence the comment aboove regarding the photo of 'Young HARFORD' in the Regimental museum collection. I have revisted the image in the collection to try and establish where the information came from. This image was one of a number from the 99th that have only been examined over the past couple of years. An Album that not been looked at in the archives for well over 50 + years. On the rear of the photo was the name HARFORD so its possible the museum has repeated an error. Closer examination and only just readable is another name that has been crossed out. The name is ROBERTS. A check of the Army List shows a Captain Thomas Law ROBERTS who is shown against the 99th from 1863 to 1869 which fits with the observations made above regarding the type of uniform and medal. Based on that I think the caption should be changed to reflect the fresh information. Cheers

| i beleive the photo in question appears in "Ian Knights Whos Who In the Zulu War Vol 1" those that mean that photo is definitely not a valid image of charles harford |
