Brief discription for each would be :

1) A view from above the Fugitives Drift Gorge, the mountain in the distance. The track just visible on the side of Mpethe is one of the approaches to the drift.

2) Similar view, mountain just to the left of the tree. really just a beautiful illustration of Africa.

3) This is a shot at the bottom of the ridge and would have been the view that the left of the chest would have had of the camp

4) From the top of the ridge, this is one of the points that the impi would have used to flood down onto the plain. The line of the road is the approx line of the British. The area on the right with the fringe of trees is the area the two troops first engaged the right horn

5) Its generally thought that all the cairns are on the saddle. These show the line of the retreat. Viewed from Younghusbands last stand.
Photo's by Springbok.

The fugitives trail starts on the left, follow the line of cairns down into the valley. The hill oposite is Mpethe, the faint line going over the top is the tourist trail. The Drift is in the valley beyond.

"These photos are taken from Hamilton Browns vantage point when he stopped on
his way back to the camp. There was some debate as to what he could see. The
farthest shot is from the ridge that the NNC took refuge on. The nedium
would have been with an average sort of telescope. The last if his telescope
was a good one, the equivqlent of  200mm lens."
