Subject: Bodies of the 80th. Sat Mar 03, 2012 10:00 pm
I was reading a letter in The Red Soldier written by Tucker, he says lots of bodies of the 80th were still missing and hadn't been found for burial.
Does anyone know if all the bodies of the 80th were found and buried or are they still missing ?
Cheers
90th

Hi DB14. The figures are in Robert Hope's book , some were never found but it seems they were swept away by the river or possibly had become entangled in the debris in the river . Quickly looking through Hope's book 21 are posted as missing initialy , with 6 of these being found and buried later . The book gives the names and their Regimental numbers . cheers 90th.

Hi 90th/DB14,
Agreed 90th, a number of those escaping into the river at Fugitives drift were swept away and their bodies never found. Yet others were reported jumping off cliff faces and dieing in the fall. These details are unknown so trying to do a recon on the overall numbers buried at Isandlwana is a bit of a wasted exercise. Further, some graves/cairns recently reconstructed were found to contain only bone fragments which passed through a 5cm sieve, ie no whole bodies there and no certaintity that all the bones were all human either. Will we ever know?
regards,
