| I reckon, it's another one of those soldiers stories. He's not the first and won't be the last. |

| Not surprising that a journalist would make the quantum leap assumption of:
24th foot ---> Rorke's Drift. |

| Hi All . Kris Wheatley has kindly sent me an email and she states ; '' I have no knowledge of any J. Trotter and his name doesn't appear in ANY of the Roll's of the defenders , It is equally possible that the man was ' elsewhere ' at the time of Isandlwana & Rorke's Drift . Was he for instance with Chelmesford , many soldiers who were not present either deliberately gave their family the impression that they were there at the time , whilst others wrote home ( Especially those passing through R.D for a few days later ) who's families mistakingly thought they had been there at the time of the battle . Some will inevitably always remain a mystery , others will and have been solved '' . cheers 90th. |

| Hi - Thanks to all for opinions and info. Thanks to 90th and Kris Wheatley. However, the slight twist with this one is the Rorke's Drift re-enactment at the Northern Command Tattoo, at Ravensworth Castle in Gateshead. Presuming that John Trotter did attend this, could he have stood along side the other 5 Rorke's Drift veterans, with an exaggerated account of his involvement in the battle?? (stills from Tattoo 'DRESS REHERSAL'. British Pathe News 1934) [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] |

| Hi CTSG. He was certainly in Sth Africa for a while as he was awarded the medal with the clasp 77-78-79 !. So that rules out the second invasion . cheers 90th. |

| John Trotter is on none of the RD rolls, so as things stand, he was not there. End of. |
