Impi,

The Union Steam Ship Company “Asiatic “ departed England on 6 December 1878, transporting the Regimental Headquarters and 2 Companies of the 99th Regiment to South Africa. The ship arrived in Durban on 10 Jan 1879. Around the 28th of January “Asiatic” departed the Cape and brought news of the Isandlwana disaster to St. Helena , which in turn lead to Captain Bradshaw taking HMS Shah to Durban with reinforcements of 150 men of the 88th Foot, and some Royal Artillery.
