Lieutenant James Nicholas Hurt.

"James was the thirteenth child of fifteen children born to Francis Hurt and Cecilia Emely Norman. He received his early schooling at Repton, later attending a school in Portsmouth. This was followed by service in the Navy where he eventually became a Sub Lieutenant. He married Alice Radford (daughter of John Radford and Mary Baillie) on 15 Sep 1874. She came from Smalley, a Derbyshire village in the vicinity of Heanor and Ilkeston. They had two children. In 1879 Jim went to Natal where he joined a mounted corps as an officer. In 1881 he divorced his wife and the court granted him sole custody of the children. James died on 20 Oct 1886, Action, Beaufort Island, Niger at age 37. He was an unsung hero of his day."
