| Just out of curiosity. How many books on the AZW do members have. Don't need the titles just the number. I have 5 in my collection. |

| Just counted 72 on my bookshelves but I do have more tucked away somewhere.
I also have a number of 'online books' saved to disc and USB but they don't count.

| I actually did a quick count yesterday as someone asked me the same question , including reports , booklets & other assorted notes , magazines and so on , approx 280 . Two book cases , still waiting on another 3 or 4 books to arrive , just goes to show how much has been written on this subject . 90th |

| Zulu Rising,,expertly written. Hill of the Sphinx...wouldn't be without it. Narrative of The Field Operations....Fantastic Maps Brave Men's Blood....one of my first books, its old and tatty.
I've just ordered The South Africa Zulu Campaign 1879 by MacKinnon and Shadbolt (Hard Cover) and although I haven't read it yet, it was a bargain so it goes in my top 5.

| 1. Hill of the Sphinx (to which I would add JW's follow up on Durnford's orders) - Simply the best. 2. AZW Bibliography by Harold Raugh - reveals fresh avenues to explore and is the most impressive work of research that I know. 3. Zulu Rising - well written and a culmination of years of knowledge gained. 4. Narrative - for the maps (to which I would add L&Qs TMFH which reveals even more about the maps). 5. Historical Records of 24th Regiment - two association copies that belonged to officers who were with Chelmsford on 22nd.
Really hard just to pick 5.

| I do have many, many books, and not all are about the AZW, there are many other subjects that interest me.
Regarding the AZW, a must have book has got to be Jackson's 'Hill of the Sphinx'.
Others are.
Julians works that are available from the museum. Zulu Rising by IK. Zulu Victory by L&Q.
There are many others that are well worth a read, but the main books I use for reference are the ones above. |

| No particular order.. Kingdom in crisis, Laband. Ploughshare of war, Cope. New perspectives, Duminy & Ballard. The Washing of the Spears, Morris. John Dunn, Ballard.
Ask again and you would get a different response.. Jackson, Knight, Whybra, Young, L & Q..ect. |

| Just as an aside, does any body out there have copy of Charles Ballard's, John Dunn, The White Chief of Zululand.. published by Donker in 1986. my copy in common with Phillip Gon's, The Road to Isandhlwana, also published by Donker, suffers from a common problem, which is the poor choice of paper chosen for the dust wrapper, its very prone to scratching and wear..so as i speak i have three copies of Gon, thinking each time i would get a better dust wrapper.. not the case, they all suffer in the same way. so i gave up on that one..so i have tried to find a better dust wrapper for the Ballard, looking online it seems it is rarer than i thought! the three i tracked down were asking crazy prices, so much more than i paid for mine around 1990, £40.00. who decides these prices?. they seem totally unrealistic to me. |

| These are the ones I can find. Many more dotted in other venues. I have several first editions, but the ones I like most are: Washing Of the Spears (Donald Morris) The Last Zulu Warrior (David Clammer) - my copy is number 167 out of 1000 printed. |

| Frederic among others on here have asked me in the past how many , or more to the point what I thought were '' must Have's ' I had a short list of about 30 from memory , it all depends what you want to read about , one of the best you can get is Ian Knight ' Fearful Hard Times At Eshowe ' simply because its the only book dealing with Pearson's Column , and is full of details , a wonderful book , I cant recommend it high enough . 90th |
