"Lord Chelmsford served with the Grenadier Guards in the Crimea from the 31st May 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie). Served with the 95th Regiment in the Indian campaign (Medal). Served in the Abyssinian campaign in 1868 as Deputy Adjutant General of the Expeditionary Force, and was present at the capture of Magdala (mentioned in despatches for " great ability and untiring energy," CB., and Medal). Served in command of the British forces in the Kafir war of 1878, and in the Zulu war of 1879, being present at the engagements of Gingiudhlovu and Ulundi (Medal with Clasp, and GCB.)"
