PostSubject: Re: Ireland Genealogy projects Archives   Ireland Genealogy projects Archives EmptyFri Mar 10, 2023 12:04 pm

Hi All,
This is a odd one from this website, i also look at records for the First Boer War as mostly Zulu War Vets took part. In the Grangegorman Military Cemetery Dublin, is a gravestone which states the following :-
In Memory of James Moore b.Ireland 1878, Royal Garrison Artillery, 1st & 2nd Boer Wars, WW1 d.July 1957 it then follows with his wives details.
The 1st Boer War was in 1880-1881 so he would have been about 3 a child, could he have been a child of a Soldier who did take part in the War. I found James record b.1877, enlisted 23 Aug 1897 Royal Artillery No.22038 served 2nd Boer War and discharged 22 Aug 1909 serving 12 years. I found another record for James born 1878 Kilrush Clare. It also states his fathers name as Thomas Moore. James re-enlisted for WW1, 30 Oct 1914 into the R Garrison Art No.409138 born 1877, serving throughout the War being discharged 5 March 1919. There are no Thomas Moore in the Royal Artillery lists for the Zulu War. However i have found a Thomas Moore Royal Artillery attested 1865 to SA 10 Jan 1881 to 14 Nov 1853 being in Natal 25 Jan 1881, the only downside is he was born in Ipswich Suffolk 1841. However Thomas Moore could be in a different Zulu War Regiment, there are Moore's in 1st KDGds, 2/21st, 58th and 94th but none with the initial T, but as in thomas i have found he could have been sent out to S Africa after the Zulu War.
