Just to add to this thread, the redoubtable Colonel Mansel seems to have some claim at leastto be "first to cross" though noton invasion day. Littlehand osted this clipping some time ago. "Subject: Colonel Mansel NMP Col Mansel - Colonel Mansel NMP EmptyFri Mar 15, 2013 10:04 pm". I am not familiar enough with the website tools toknow how to attach a subject link, but this should get to to the right place.
As to Col Mansel he has always seemed to me to be a canny operator. There seems to be precious little biographical information about him other than mentions in books relating to this and the later history of Zululand (The NMP History, and the Start Zulu Rebellion. He was a constant figure in the disruptions in Zululand from his joiningof the NMP I tihnk it was 1872 until his retirement in 1906 his memoirs oor papers should they exist would be fascinating reading.

Here’s another view of the crossing, an engraving from The Graphic from a sketch provided by Lieutenant Charles Pope, 2nd Battalion, 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment.
